“I wonder if the massive demand for STEM students has led to a decrease in academic rigor. More students means more research, leaving colleges with relatively fewer/less qualified reviewers to monitor and troubleshoot.
In addition, universities have little short-term incentive to drive away paying students. In the long run, allowing minor students to succeed only harms the sciences, but academia today is very divided, and ethics are as far from STEM as can be.
I am not suggesting that STEM professionals are less ethical than anyone else; it’s just that ethics has become a legal checklist rather than true moral principles. Without a doubt, there are truly ethical professionals who remain uncompromising in their standards; I just worry that they are the academic equivalent of the northern white rhinoceros – old and barren, just waiting to see who will be the last of the once proud breed.”
