California won’t do business with Walgreens over abortion pill issues – Gov.

(Reuters) – California will not do business with Walgreens Boots Alliance (NASDAQ:) Inc, Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a tweet on Monday, days after the pharmacy chain said it would not sell abortion pills in some states where the Republicans dominate.

The state refuses to do business with Walgreens or “any company that puts extremist fronts and puts women’s lives at risk,” Newsom, a Democrat, said.

A spokesman for the governor said “every relationship” between Walgreens and the state is being reviewed, but declined to say how business ties might change.

Walgreens said last week it would not sell abortion pills in 20 states, including states where abortion remains legal, where Republican attorneys general warned the company of the risk of violating the law if it distributed the pills.

In a statement released later Monday to clarify its position, Walgreens said it plans to distribute mifepristone abortion pills in any jurisdiction where it is legal.

“Once we receive FDA clearance, we will market this drug in accordance with federal and state laws,” the company said.

Walgreens did not immediately respond to a Reuters request to clarify whether it would distribute abortion pills in 20 states, where it was warned by Republican attorneys general.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in January allowed retail pharmacies to sell mifepristone in abortion pills, including by mail order, provided they were certified under the drug’s special safety regulations.
